Adult-contemporary Christian pop applied to Nativity themes: lush orchestral-pop arrangements (frequently with full symphony), polished Nashville session playing, warm layered vocal harmonies, and a songbook that mixes reverent carol settings with original ballads about Mary, the manger, and family homecoming. Dynamics build from hushed, piano-and-strings intimacy to key-change climaxes; production tracks mainstream AC pop of its era, from 80s synth sheen to 90s cinematic strings to modern arena-worship drums. Crucially it is a productive tradition, not just covers — its originals ("Mary, Did You Know?", "Breath of Heaven", "All Is Well", "The Christmas Shoes") entered the general Christmas canon and are now covered by mainstream artists.
History
Launched by Amy Grant's A Christmas Album (Myrrh/A&M, 1983, cut across nine studios with Michael W. Smith on keys), which proved a CCM star could own the holiday market; Smith's Christmas (Reunion, 1989) added the symphonic template, and Grant's double-platinum Home for Christmas (1992) — with Chris Eaton's "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)" — made the CCM Christmas album an industry institution; Michael English's 1991 debut introduced Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene's "Mary, Did You Know?", NewSong's "The Christmas Shoes" hit No. 1 AC on mainstream radio in 2000, and the tradition persists in Grant and Smith's annual joint Christmas tours and for KING & COUNTRY's chart-topping A Drummer Boy Christmas (2020).
