Advent Worship
Located in 1 route
Contemporary worship and liturgical indie-folk written or arranged specifically for the four weeks of Advent — hushed, minor-leaning, and longing-themed where mainstream Christian Christmas music is festive. Typical textures are chamber strings, piano, pump organ, ambient guitar swells, and unhurried congregational melodies; lyrics center on waiting, darkness-to-light, Isaiah's prophecies, and the Magnificat rather than the manger scene. Acts like The Brilliance and Future of Forestry fold post-rock and neoclassical elements in, while Sovereign Grace and Sojourn keep a modern-hymn congregational frame; children's-album entries (Rain for Roots) use folk lullaby settings. The shared marker is restraint — dynamics held back until Christmas Eve resolution.
History
Emerged from the 2000s liturgical-renewal wing of evangelical worship: Sojourn Music's Advent Songs (2007) and Future of Forestry's three Advent Christmas EPs opened the lane; The Brilliance's Advent, Vol. 1 (2011) and Page CXVI's Advent to Christmas (2013) defined the chamber-folk sound; Sovereign Grace Music's Prepare Him Room (2014, with companion devotional and curriculum) and Rain for Roots' Waiting Songs (2015) pushed it into church and family use, and Christy Nockels' The Thrill of Hope (2016) carried it into mainstream CCM; The Gospel Coalition's "111 Great Songs for Advent" documents the repertoire's breadth.
