Christmas Hymn
Located in 1 route
The solemn, liturgical wing of Christmas music — stately, theological, hymnal-derived songs ("Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", "Adeste Fideles/O Come All Ye Faithful", "Joy to the World", "O Holy Night", "Silent Night") as distinct from folk-origin carols and secular pop standards. The recorded sound splits into three lineages: Anglican cathedral-choir treatments with organ and boy trebles; orchestral crooner readings with choirs (Sinatra's and Cole's "religious side two" tradition); and gospel/diva showcases that turn "O Holy Night" or "Joy to the World" into melisma-heavy, choir-backed climaxes. Tempos are broad, harmony is four-part and church-rooted, and arrangements build to full-voice doxological endings. Hymnologists distinguish these from carols by their solemnity, hymnal provenance, and God-addressed theological texts.
History
Texts and tunes come from the 18th–19th-century hymn explosion — Watts's "Joy to the World" (1719), Wesley/Mendelssohn's "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing", "Adeste Fideles", Adam's "O Holy Night" (1847), Gruber's "Silent Night" (1818); King's College Cambridge's Nine Lessons and Carols broadcasts (from 1918) canonized the choral versions, while Sinatra's A Jolly Christmas (1957) and Nat King Cole's The Magic of Christmas (1960) fixed the pop-album convention of a sacred hymn side; gospel and R&B singers from Mahalia Jackson through Mariah Carey (1994) and Whitney Houston with the Georgia Mass Choir (1996) made the hymns perennial vocal showpieces.
