European-style melodic power metal — soaring high-register vocals, twin-guitar harmonies, neoclassical shred solos, double-kick gallop, and keyboard-draped epic arrangements — with lyrics recast from dragons and battles to scripture, spiritual warfare, redemption, and worship; the Swedish wing (Narnia, Divinefire) leans neoclassical and melodic-noble, the American wing (Theocracy, Rob Rock, Jacobs Dream) leans progressive and theatrical with multi-part suites running past twenty minutes, and Finland's HB adds a symphonic, choir-colored, female-fronted variant; the mood is triumphant and anthemic where Christian doom is penitent.
History
Emerged in Sweden in 1996 when guitarist Carl Johan Grimmark and vocalist Christian Liljegren formed Narnia (debut Awakening, 1998; Long Live the King, 1999), with veteran Impellitteri vocalist Rob Rock's solo debut Rage of Creation (2000) and Ohio's Jacobs Dream on Metal Blade anchoring a US wing; Matt Smith's one-man-turned-full-band Theocracy (formed 2002, Athens, Georgia) became the genre's compositional flagship through Ulterium Records with Mirror of Souls (2008) and As the World Bleeds (2011), while Liljegren's Divinefire and Golden Resurrection and Finland's HB broadened the scene, which remains active via Theocracy's and Narnia's ongoing releases.
