Textbook second-wave black metal sonics — icy tremolo-picked riffs, blast beats, shrieked and rasped vocals, deliberately raw or frostbitten production, with frequent symphonic keys, folk melody, and funeral-doom passages in the Norwegian and Swedish strains — but the lyrics invert the genre's Satanic core into spiritual warfare, lament, and "holy unblack" declarations of the triumph of light. Antestor added a distinctly mournful, melodic "sorrow metal" cast with clean choral vocals and acoustic interludes, while Crimson Moonlight pushed toward faster, symphonic and later dissonant technical black metal. The aggression, atmosphere, and lo-fi aesthetic are indistinguishable from secular black metal; only the ideology is flipped, which is precisely what made the style so incendiary.
History
Norway's Antestor (formed 1990 as Crush Evil) were the first openly Christian band inside black metal's homeland, but the genre's flashpoint was Hellig Usvart (1994) by Australia's Horde — a one-man project of Mortification/Paramaecium drummer Jayson Sherlock released anonymously on Nuclear Blast, whose title ("holy unblack") parodied Darkthrone's "unholy black metal" slogan and provoked death threats demanding the label drop it; Antestor's The Return of the Black Death (1998, Cacophonous) and Vaakevandring's demos built a Norwegian scene, Sweden's Crimson Moonlight and Rivel Records plus labels like Endtime, Momentum Scandinavia, Nordic Mission, and Bombworks sustained a 2000s wave (Slechtvalk in the Netherlands, Frost Like Ashes in the US, Elgibbor in Poland, Drottnar in Norway), Antestor's The Forsaken (2005) even featured Mayhem drummer Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg as session player, and a niche international underground continues today.
