Full-bore death metal — down-tuned tremolo and chug riffing, guttural growled vocals, blast beats and double-kick barrages, murky early-90s production in the Morrisound/Scott Burns vein — carrying explicitly evangelistic, scriptural, and anti-occult lyrics instead of gore and blasphemy. Mortification's classic sound sat between Death-style riffcraft and grindcore blur, Living Sacrifice began as a Slayer-indebted thrash/death hybrid before turning toward groove, and offshoots ran to doom/death (Paramaecium), brutal death (Crimson Thorn), and goregrind (Vomitorial Corpulence). Vocally and instrumentally it matches its secular counterpart note for note; the growled sermons and song titles about mortality and redemption are the marker. It is the direct ancestor of the Christian metalcore and deathcore booms that followed.
History
Emerged 1989–1992 across three continents — Mortification, Paramaecium, and Vomitorial Corpulence in Australia, Living Sacrifice (Little Rock), Crimson Thorn (Minneapolis) in the US, Sympathy in Canada — with Mortification's Scrolls of the Megilloth (1992, Nuclear Blast/Intense) becoming the scene's landmark and the first Christian death metal record on a major metal label; Living Sacrifice's Nonexistent (1992) and Inhabit (1994) on R.E.X. cemented the US wing before their pivot to metalcore on Reborn (1997) influenced a generation of Solid State bands, labels like Intense, R.E.X., Rowe Productions, and later Bombworks and Rottweiler carried the style, Norway's Extol brought a progressive death/thrash strain in the late 90s, and veterans (Mortification, Crimson Thorn) plus newer acts keep the underground active today.
