Deathcore's signature collision of death metal and metalcore/hardcore — down-tuned, percussive chug riffs, crushing breakdowns, blast-beat bursts, and layered guttural-to-shriek vocals — deployed for worship, evangelism, and end-times imagery rather than nihilism, a stance Impending Doom branded "gorship" (gore + worship). The style leans harder on groove and breakdown architecture than riff-driven Christian death metal, with slam-adjacent low-end heaviness and hardcore-derived mosh calls; later Impending Doom records folded in industrial-tinged atmosphere and nu-metal groove without softening the vocals. Lyrically it swings between graphic depictions of sin and judgment and direct declarations of faith shouted over the heaviest sections. It is essentially the extreme-music arm of the late-2000s Facedown/Solid State Christian heavy scene.
History
Coalesced in 2005 when Impending Doom formed in Riverside, California and With Blood Comes Cleansing in Albany, Georgia; WBCC's Golgotha (2006, Blood & Ink) and Horror (2008, Victory) and Impending Doom's Nailed. Dead. Risen. (2007, Facedown) — which coined "gorship" — defined the style, Facedown/Strike First became its hub (In the Midst of Lions' Out of Darkness, 2009; Impending Doom's The Serpent Servant, 2009, and There Will Be Violence, 2010), Impending Doom crossed over to eOne with Baptized in Filth (2012, featuring guest spots from As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambesis) and charted on the Billboard 200, France's Betraying the Martyrs carried overtly Christian deathcore into the European scene early on, and the style persists through Impending Doom's continued releases and touring — including a 2025 reunion mini-tour with With Blood Comes Cleansing.
