A named twenty-first-century movement writing new hymns in the historic mold: strophic multi-verse texts that build a theological argument, married to singable congregational melodies and kept in piano-and-acoustic arrangements modest enough for an untrained room to carry — a deliberate counterweight to chorus-driven worship pop. Keith & Kristyn Getty and Stuart Townend set the template with "In Christ Alone", and Sovereign Grace Music, Sydney's CityAlight, and Matt Boswell & Matt Papa built catalogs on it, alongside a retuned wing that re-sets historic public-domain texts to new tunes. The movement's institutions — Getty Music, the Sing! conferences, CCLI's congregational rankings — mark it as a self-conscious school rather than a loose trend.

History

Keith Getty and Stuart Townend wrote "In Christ Alone" in 2001 (first issued on New Irish Hymns), and it became one of the most-sung congregational songs in the English-speaking world, anchoring CCLI's top rankings for two decades; the pair's follow-ups ("The Power of the Cross", "Speak, O Lord" 2005) defined a modern-hymns catalog the Gettys now steward through Getty Music and the Sing! conferences, while Sovereign Grace Music's Valley of Vision (2006) folded Puritan prayer texts into the form and Sandra McCracken's Psalms (2015) carried the retuned wing; the movement's global reach showed when CityAlight's "Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me" (2018) and the multi-writer "Christ Our Hope in Life and Death" (2020) entered congregational repertoire worldwide within months of release.
