The São Paulo answer to Rio's funk, built around an enormous distorted sub-bass "estouro" that is meant to hit the body before the ear — dry, hypnotic four- and eight-bar loops of saturated metallic percussion, clipped toms and rim clicks over a simple kick, almost no melody or chord movement, and vocals reduced to chopped, pitched, endlessly repeated fragments and call-and-response shouts rather than sung verses; tempos sit around 130 BPM but the feel is heavy and stomping rather than fast, everything is compressed to the edge of clipping so it survives a favela paredão or a car-trunk rig at full volume, and crucially the authorship sits with the DJ, not the MC — tracks are credited to producers and stacked as montagens (MTGs) that cut between hooks every few bars.
History
Mandelão took shape in the metropolitan periphery of São Paulo and the Baixada Santista in the mid-2010s, as funk ostentação's shine faded and street fluxos replaced club bailes as the scene's centre of gravity; the name points to the Baile do Mandela, and the style consolidated between 2015 and 2017 around DJ GBR's Ritmo dos Fluxos project, which codified the heavier, minimalist, endlessly repetitive template that gave the genre its second name, ritmo dos fluxos; it spread through the bailes of Helipa, DZ7, Marcone and Casinhas and through YouTube and SoundCloud rather than radio, and it permanently shifted funk's spotlight from MCs to producers — DJ Blakes, DJ Patrick R, Deekapz, DJ Pikeno MPC, DJ Ramon Sucesso and dozens more built national followings under their own names, while MCs like MC GW and MC Vitin da DZ7 became recurring voices across other people's tracks; from 2023 the style broke internationally, with DJ Ramon Sucesso's Sexta dos Crias and Uganda's Nyege Nyege Tapes drawing experimental-club attention and NTS Radio's funk.BR – São Paulo compilation, curated by Jonathan Kim and Felipe Maia in 2024, presenting mandelão and its offshoots — ritmado, bruxaria, automotivo — to a global audience.
