Recife's hybrid of Pernambuco brega and Rio funk, and the lightest-sounding branch of the family: fast (often around 160–170 BPM) but airy, with a skipping, syncopated kick pattern that lands off the count, high-pitched synth leads and whistle tones, a signature clipped "robotic" vocal or Megatron-style soundsystem sample, and shakers and rimshots where Rio would put heavy tamborzão drums; vocals split between chirpy, catchy chant hooks written around a specific dance step — the passinho dos maloka — and a smoother "batidão romântico" croon inherited from northeastern brega, and the whole thing is arranged in psytrance-like build-and-drop shapes so the release point lines up with the choreography, which is why the genre travelled as dance videos before it travelled as records.

History

Brega funk took shape in Recife's periphery around 2011, when local MCs and DJs started laying funk carioca patterns over the electrobrega and batidão romântico that already dominated Pernambuco's suburban parties, with Sheldon, Cego, Tocha, Dadá Boladão and MC Troia among the early names; the breakout came in 2018, first with MC Loma e as Gêmeas Lacração — a teenager from Jaboatão dos Guararapes with no label — whose "Envolvimento" went to number one on Spotify's global viral chart and became the Carnival hit of the year, then with Shevchenko e Elloco's "Gera Bactéria", whose producer Geison Santana introduced the high, sampled Megatron textures that reset the genre's sound and whose video made the passinho dos maloka a national dance craze; through 2019 the scene converted virality into chart power with MC Troia's "Pode Balançar", Dadá Boladão's "Surtada" remix with Tati Zaqui and OIK, and Thiaguinho MT, Mila and JS o Mão de Ouro's "Tudo OK", while KondZilla and GR6 distribution and a Spotify documentary gave Recife's producers national infrastructure; by the early 2020s the rhythm had been adopted by Anitta, Pabllo Vittar, Léo Santana and others, and brega funk had become the northeastern pole of Brazilian funk rather than a regional curiosity — though the splits and credits for its biggest viral records remain a live grievance in the scene.
