Understanding the genre
Show tunes are songs written for stage or screen musicals and shaped by dramatic function—entrance numbers, love duets, comedy turns, "I want" songs, finales, and character pieces. On record they often retain theatrical diction, clear narrative intent, and strong melodic architecture even when detached from the original plot.
History
Before rock dominated popular song, show tunes were a central engine of mainstream repertoire, feeding Broadway, Hollywood, radio, cast albums, and eventually the Great American Songbook; material from Kern, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Porter, Bernstein, Loesser, Herman, Sondheim, and others made the category both a commercial mainstream and a training ground for performers.
