The trombone shout band tradition of the United House of Prayer for All People: ecstatic brass choirs — six to a dozen trombones with sousaphone, baritone, and drums — that drive congregations to "shout" during services, baptisms, funerals, and street parades. The sound stacks massed trombone riffs into rolling, ever-intensifying grooves, with a lead trombone preaching melismatic lines over the choir like a sanctified vocalist, blending gospel quartet harmony, New Orleans brass-band drive, and Pentecostal fire. Bands are congregation-based and hereditary, passing licks and repertoire through House of Prayer families along the East Coast corridor from New York to the Carolinas; the music is functional worship first, performance second.

History

The United House of Prayer, founded by Bishop C.M. "Sweet Daddy" Grace, developed brass shout bands as the engine of its worship by the mid-20th century, with the tradition passing largely undocumented outside the church for decades; national attention arrived when Smithsonian Folkways released Saints' Paradise: Trombone Shout Bands from the United House of Prayer (1999), recorded from the church's leading ensembles — Edward Babb's McCollough Sons of Thunder (Harlem), Madison's Lively Stones (Washington DC), the Kings of Harmony, and the Happyland Band — and press from the Village Voice to Southern Cultures introduced the style to the wider world; the bands continue as living congregational institutions, parading and shouting at House of Prayer convocations today.
