Recordings are typically seamless and loopable, mastered smooth and low without sudden peaks, and frequently layered with window or roof ambience. There is no melody or beat; texture, density and consistency are everything.
History
Rain is one of the oldest packaged nature sounds, anchored by Irv Teibel's Environments Gentle Rain in a Pine Forest (1974) and Dan Gibson's Solitudes rain titles, prized for their masking qualities and even featured in relaxation research. The lane became a mass phenomenon in the smartphone era: apps and sites such as Rainy Mood (2011) and Stéphane Pigeon's myNoise rain generators (from 2013) drew huge audiences, and YouTube filled with multi-hour rain-on-window videos. On streaming it is now an enormous anonymous functional category, though the pioneering documented recordings remain the reference points.
