The liturgical singing of the Eastern Orthodox churches — monophonic Byzantine chant with ison drone in the Greek and Athonite lines, and the rich multi-part choral idiom of the Slavic churches — performed a cappella by choirs, monastic brotherhoods, and specialist ensembles. The Byzantine wing moves in modal melodies over a sustained drone with ornamented solo cantillation; the Slavic wing stacks deep basso profundo foundations under soaring upper voices in the harmonized style Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil brought to the concert hall. Recording contexts range from monastery churches captured live to audiophile ensemble productions engineered for cathedral acoustics.

History

Rooted in the Byzantine cantorial tradition and carried through Greek, Serbian, and Russian practice, Orthodox chant entered the recorded catalog in earnest with Alexander Sveshnikov's 1965 Melodiya recording of Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil — made for export only under Soviet anti-religious policy; the Monks of Simonopetra on Mount Athos popularized "Agni Parthene" worldwide with their 1990 recording, Lykourgos Angelopoulos's Greek Byzantine Choir (founded 1977) revived medieval Byzantine performance practice, and Serbia's Divna Ljubojević and Moscow's Sretensky Monastery Choir became international touring and streaming successes; Cappella Romana's 2019 Lost Voices of Hagia Sophia, recorded in virtually reconstructed Hagia Sophia acoustics, topped Billboard's Traditional Classical Albums chart in March 2020.
