Recordings of surf — waves breaking and receding on sand or rock, sometimes with gulls, wind or distant swell — used for relaxation, sleep and focus. The slow in-and-out rhythm of waves, roughly matching a calm breathing rate, is the signature; the broadband hiss of foam masks noise while the swell provides a gentle, hypnotic pulse. History
Ocean surf is arguably the archetypal nature recording, launched commercially by Irv Teibel's The Psychologically Ultimate Seashore (Environments 1, 1969), whose looped Brighton Beach waves were among the first electronically processed field recordings sold to the public. Dan Gibson's Solitudes issued definitive surf titles like Ocean Surf (1995), and acoustic ecologists such as Gordon Hempton recorded coastlines worldwide. The sound became a fixture of relaxation cassettes, spa playlists, sleep apps and YouTube beach loops, remaining one of the most popular functional soundscapes in every era.
