Ocean field recordings blended with gentle meditative music — soft pads, flute, singing bowls or slow piano floated over surf — used to guide breath, relaxation and mindfulness. Distinct from pure ocean-waves recordings by the addition of a light musical bed keyed to the slow in-and-out rhythm of the waves, encouraging a matching breathing pace. Tempos are beat-free or very slow, harmonies consonant and sustained, and the mix keeps both the sea and the music low and enveloping. The mood is contemplative and restorative, aimed at meditation and sleep.

History

The ocean-plus-music formula was pioneered by new-age wellness artists such as Dean Evenson, whose Soundings of the Planet records paired surf and nature with flute and keyboards, and Anugama and Deuter, whose meditation albums often used sea beds. It drew equally on the pure ocean recordings of Irv Teibel and Dan Gibson and on the guided-meditation movement, becoming a fixture of relaxation compilations, yoga-nidra sessions and, in the 2010s, meditation apps. The lane sits between nature soundscape and meditation music, using the sea as both texture and breathing metronome.
