Lo-fi built around a soft, felt or slightly detuned piano as the lead voice — gentle chord loops and simple melodies over dusty, understated drums at 70–85 BPM, wrapped in vinyl crackle and warm reverb. The piano is intimate and close-miked, sometimes with sustain-pedal wash and mechanical key noise for character; drums stay low and rounded so the keys carry the mood. Textures are calm and slightly melancholy. The mood is tender and studious, popular for focus, reading and relaxation.

History

Piano-led lo-fi grew as producers in the Chillhop and Lofi Girl orbit foregrounded felt-piano textures borrowed from neoclassical and sleep music, pairing them with boom-bap drums. Artists like Kupla, Aso, Jinsang and L'indécis built catalogs on warm keyboard loops, and the felt-piano aesthetic of the 2010s ambient-piano boom bled directly into the beat scene. It became a staple of study and calm playlists, sitting where lo-fi meets modern-classical piano.
