History
Latin Pop-R&B grew from late-1990s bilingual crossover, when Miami's Jon Secada carried a soul-schooled pop voice into the mainstream and ex-Kumbia Kings singer Frankie J brought West Coast R&B to Latin audiences. Through the 2000s and 2010s the lane widened as Leslie Grace, Kat Dahlia and Jencarlos Canela mixed R&B phrasing with pop and tropical rhythms. Colombian-American Kali Uchis pushed a neo-soul and dreamy R&B strain into the Spanish-language mainstream in the late 2010s, culminating in her Spanish-sung breakthroughs. The style remains a bridge between Latin pop and contemporary R&B, informing today's melodic urbano.
