Horror Trailer Cue

Understanding the genre
The dread-manufacturing strain of trailer scoring for horror and thriller campaigns: dissonant string clusters, sub-bass drones, distorted stingers, warped music-box and lullaby motifs, and sudden silences shattered by a scream or impact. Cues privilege texture and shock over melody, using scraping extended techniques, reversed sounds and creeping crescendos that snap into jump-scare hits. Production is grimy, close and unnerving, engineered to make skin crawl. The mood is menace, decay and terror.
History
Horror trailer scoring blends composed dark-orchestral cues with the genre's tradition of recontextualising eerie needle-drops (Tiny Tim's 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips' in Insidious; whistled themes evoking Bernard Herrmann's 'Twisted Nerve'). Through the 2000s and 2010s, houses supplied purpose-built dread: E.S. Posthumus's brooding pieces, Pfeifer Broz.'s dark orchestral work, Two Steps from Hell's shadow-toned epics and the drone-and-stinger toolkits of Hi-Finesse and Ninja Tracks. Blumhouse-era horror marketing intensified demand for the stinger-and-silence cue, making it a distinct and enduring trailer craft.
