Black gospel of the late 1960s and 1970s driven by hard funk rhythm sections — wah guitar, heavy bass, James Brown-schooled drumming — under choir call-and-response and testimony vocals, spanning major-label crossover acts and self-released church-basement 45s. The groove is secular Saturday night, the message strictly Sunday morning: sanctified lyrics shouted, testified, and traded with a choir over breakbeats that later made these records prime hip-hop sampling material. Production ranges from polished Stax and Light Records studio work to raw private-press recordings cut with church-basement bands, and the style's rediscovery through crate-digging reissues gave it a second life decades after the fact.

History

As soul and funk swept Black radio, COGIC-rooted innovators like Andraé Crouch & the Disciples and Detroit's Rance Allen Group (first signing to Stax's Gospel Truth imprint, 1972) fused church message with secular groove — Allen even flipping Archie Bell's "There's Gonna Be a Showdown" into a sanctified stomper — while Chicago's Pastor T.L. Barrett cut the Chess-sessioneer-backed "Like a Ship" (1971) with an after-school choir; hundreds of obscure private-press acts worked the same seam, later canonized by Numero Group's Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal (2006), and the style's DNA fed directly into contemporary gospel and hip-hop sampling — Barrett's "Like a Ship" alone was sampled by Kanye West, T.I., and Khalid after the 2010s reissues.
