The clandestine, faction-affiliated end of Rio funk — musically it is tamborzão at its rawest, distorted low end, clipping drums, a single looped percussion bed with almost no melodic content, and gunshots, ricochets and rifle bolts used as literal percussion — recorded off the mixing desk at live bailes rather than in studios, so the dominant texture is a shouting MC over a blown-out PA with a crowd audible behind him; the delivery is declamatory and roll-called, naming hills, streets, bondes and dead friends, and the words carry the genre's whole point: territorial reportage, threats against rival commands and police, eulogies for the killed, and a documentary bluntness about favela life that made the tracks illegal to broadcast and therefore circulated on burned CDs, MP3 blogs and later SoundCloud archives.
History
Proibidão emerged in the mid-1990s inside Rio's favela baile circuit, with MCs Júnior e Leonardo's "Rap das Armas" — written in 1992, recorded in 1995 — generally cited as the first track openly labelled "proibido", its inventory of weaponry setting the template; through the late 1990s and 2000s the style ran almost entirely outside the legal market, sustained by MC Smith, MC Frank, MCs Renatinho e Alemão and others whose tracks named specific commands and communities, while the 2007 film Tropa de Elite pushed Cidinho & Doca's version of "Rap das Armas" to international charts and made the sound globally legible without legalising it; a 2005 Rio civil-police operation indicted thirteen funk artists for apology of drug trafficking, including MC Frank over "157 Boladão", and the post-2008 pacification programme criminalised the fluxos where the music lived, so performance shrank even as MC Orelha's "Na Faixa de Gaza É Assim" (2009) and MC Smith's "Vida Bandida" (2009) became the era's defining records; scholars — above all Carlos Palombini, whose Proibidão.org archive preserves the live recordings — have since treated the repertoire as primary documentation of Rio's drug war, and its aesthetics fed directly into later hardcore strands rather than dying out.
