São Paulo's wealth-display wave, and the first Brazilian funk built for YouTube rather than for a speaker wall: the beat is a cleaner, slower, more spacious cousin of tamborzão, often just a hard kick, tight rimshot-ish snare and a rolling hand-drum figure under a thin synth riff or a sampled string/whistle hook, with a lot of empty space so the vocal sits forward; the MCs deliver in a nasal, sing-song São Paulo cadence with heavy autotune-adjacent doubling and gang-chanted hooks, and the lyrics are pure aspirational inventory — imported car models, motorbike collections, champagne, branded caps, hundred-real notes, the neighbourhood's name — a rhetoric that only works alongside the glossy, colour-graded KondZilla-style videos the songs were written to soundtrack.

History

The style grew out of São Paulo's periphery baile circuit in the late 2000s, when MCs such as MC Boy do Charmes and Backdi & BioG3 started swapping Rio's sexual and territorial themes for consumer boasting; it detonated in July 2011 when "Mégane" — named for a Renault model — hit a million YouTube views in 28 days, and MC Rodolfinho's "Como É Bom Ser Vida Loka" repeated the feat in under twenty, both propelled by videos from the young Santos filmmaker Konrad Dantas, whose Canal KondZilla turned a favela genre into a national video industry and eventually Brazil's most-subscribed channel; MC Guimê became the movement's face with "Tá Patrão" and "Plaque de 100" in 2012, MC Lon, MC Léo da Baixada, MC Bola and the teenaged MC Daleste filled out the roster, and the shooting of Daleste on stage in Campinas on 6 July 2013 — he died the next day — gave the scene its grimmest national headline and, paradoxically, its widest exposure; by 2014 Guimê's Emicida collaboration "País do Futebol" had pushed the sound into World Cup ubiquity, after which ostentação's boasting dissolved into mainstream funk pop and its production lineage passed to the faster São Paulo styles that followed.
