Understanding the genre
Electro Classic is the canon of foundational old-school electro records: the tracks that DJs, dancers, collectors, and producers return to as templates. It emphasizes recognizable 808 programming, vocoder chants, Kraftwerk-derived melodies, space-age funk, and early hip-hop club energy. These records define the reference points for later electro, breaks, Miami bass, freestyle, techno, and dance-pop.
History
The classic era begins with "Planet Rock" and quickly expands through New York, LA, Detroit, and label networks that pressed extended 12-inches for clubs and street dance. Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force, Hashim, Newcleus, Man Parrish, Egyptian Lover, Cybotron, Jonzun Crew, Warp 9, Twilight 22, Herbie Hancock, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, and Freestyle created a durable set of old-school standards. Reissue culture and electro revival scenes keep the canon active.
