Understanding the genre
Dreampunk is atmospheric electronic music that builds an imagined place as much as a beat: dreamlike space, night-lit city imagery and inward emotion shape its feel. On 2814’s 2016 album Rain Temple, spacious synth drones, distant vocals and swirling percussion make that scale audible. Rather than one groove pattern, its defining pull is the feeling of a place opening up around the listener.
Its tempo and pulse are flexible: some music suspends the beat in drone, while other releases soften house or downtempo rhythms into hazier, dreamlike motion. Across that range, layered electronic texture and imagined city or dream spaces matter as much as a steady dance beat.
History
HKE’s early Dream Catalogue work gives Dreampunk an internet-label and dream-imagery context: he described the imprint as a hobbyist collective and connected Hong Kong Express with love and loneliness in the big city. Those remarks are useful participant framing, not a settled single-founder or single-origin account of the wider style.
A visible early album arc runs from 2814’s collaborative self-titled project, first issued digitally on Ailanthus in 2014, to Birth Of A New Day, their second album, in 2015. Dream Catalogue later credited Birth Of A New Day with catalysing the Dreampunk movement, an important label account of the scene’s formation.
The catalog extended beyond the duo: Shima33’s 2015 Museum is tagged ambient, drone, meditation and Dreampunk, while Remember’s 2015 Route Back Home includes city and cyberpunk tags. Later releases keep the palette open: Shima33’s 2020 Recreation is described as a patchwork of house, downtempo and ambient, while HKE’s 2020 K carries ambient, Dreampunk, dreamtech and techno tags.
Dream Catalogue’s November 2020 This Is Dreampunk vol. 1 brought Remember’s “Haven” and Shima33’s “Loneliness” into a compilation the label described as spanning artists and outlets around the world, across borders and languages. In a later interview HKE estimated that the name had become a recognized genre and movement around 2019/20, qualifying that timing with “I think,” and credited artists beyond Dream Catalogue with growing it. Sangam’s 2023 Around Nothing page offers a later catalog point, retaining ambient and Dreampunk tags with rainy-night imagery.
Defining artists
HKE and Telepath’s collaborative project blends Dreampunk with ambient and cyberpunk atmosphere; Rain Temple evokes spacious synth drones, distant vocals and swirling percussion.

Shima33 moves between ambient/drone atmosphere and rhythmic hybrids: Museum is meditative, while Recreation bends house and downtempo into a patchwork.
Museum suspends itself in ambient drone and meditative space; Recreation stretches toward house and downtempo grooves, softened into less familiar shapes.
Remember links city imagery to ambient Dreampunk on Route Back Home and The City Is My Friend; Four Shots Of Green Stone offers a rougher turn toward guitars and harder drums.
Route Back Home and The City Is My Friend pair ambient, city-facing atmosphere with Dreampunk; Four Shots Of Green Stone roughens the palette with guitars and harder drums.
Sangam sets the dark-ambient edge of Mount To Nothing beside Around Nothing’s somber synth lines, melancholic pads and rainy-night imagery.
Mount To Nothing pairs dark ambience with Dreampunk; Around Nothing carries a related mood in somber synths, melancholic pads and a night-city journey.
A solo electronic artist whose A combines Dreampunk with ambient and drone textures, and whose music HKE described as having a lucid-dream quality.
On A, Telepath explores ambient/drone textures within Dreampunk; in 2814, the collaboration with HKE carries a related atmosphere through synth drones, distant vocals and swirling percussion.
