Understanding the genre

Cyberpunk Score is electronic music for neon cities, machine bodies, surveillance, hackers, corporate violence, and artificial life. It favors analog synths, industrial drums, digital distortion, darkwave pressure, future-retro melodies, and low mechanical pulses. It can be lush and noir like `Blade Runner`, clubby like game soundtracks, or punishing and industrial when the story turns dystopian.

History

Vangelis' `Blade Runner`, Wendy Carlos' `TRON`, and John Carpenter's synth-score minimalism set the template. Later Daft Punk, Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Perturbator, Power Glove, Carpenter Brut, Mega Drive, Daniel Deluxe, HEALTH, Akira Yamaoka, Paul Leonard-Morgan, Cliff Martinez, and cyberpunk game composers expanded it into synthwave, darksynth, industrial, and game-score scenes. The sound now works as both soundtrack language and standalone club/playlist identity.
