Sacred songs in the Western/singing-cowboy idiom: smooth two- and three-part trio harmony in the Sons of the Pioneers mold, warm baritone leads, unhurried waltz and trail-ballad tempos over acoustic and archtop guitar with fiddle color, and almost none of honky-tonk's twang or Southern gospel's quartet drive. Repertoire mixes original inspirational Westerns that find God in open range, sunsets, and "the touch of God's hand" with standard hymns recast in campfire arrangements, plus spoken recitation and cowboy-poetry framing. The mood is reverent, gentle, and outdoors-facing — church under the sky rather than in the pew.

History

Born in Bob Nolan's 1930s inspirational Westerns for the Sons of the Pioneers; exploded after singing cowboy Stuart Hamblen's 1949 conversion at Billy Graham's Los Angeles crusade yielded "It Is No Secret", the syndicated Cowboy Church of the Air radio show, and the family-band Cowboy Church Sunday School's 1955 pop top-10; Roy Rogers and Dale Evans cut devotional LPs for Capitol and Marty Robbins added "What God Has Done" (1966); the style was revived through the Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering (1985 onward), the Western Jubilee Recording Company (Sons of the San Joaquin's Gospel Trails, 1997; Red Steagall), and the 1990s–2000s cowboy-church movement that made it a living congregational tradition across Texas and Oklahoma.
