Bouncy, melody-first electronic pop built on synthesizers and drum machines rather than guitars, sung with high, airy, often falsetto vocals over lyrics that mix devotion with whimsical fairy-tale imagery. The 1980s first wave (Crumbächer) favored glossy new-wave dance-pop with big DX7-era keyboard hooks, while the 1990s Joy Electric school became famously purist, recording entire albums solely on analog monosynths with hand-programmed arpeggios and synthesized percussion in a lineage critics trace to the Pet Shop Boys, Sparks, Erasure, and Depeche Mode. Code of Ethics brought a slicker Europop/radio-dance version of the sound to Christian AC radio, and The Echoing Green added darker EBM- and trance-tinged textures, so the mood ranges from candy-bright and childlike to melancholy and atmospheric.
History
Christian synthpop emerged in mid-1980s Southern California when Crumbächer, on the Frontline/Broken Records orbit, scored CCM Top 40 airplay with new-wave keyboard pop ("Interstellar Satellite", 1986); the early 1990s second wave ran through Michael Knott's Blonde Vinyl label, where teenage brothers Ronnie and Jason Martin recorded as Dance House Children (Songs & Stories, 1991) before Jason founded shoegazers Starflyer 59 and Ronnie launched Joy Electric on Tooth & Nail (Melody, 1994; the analog-only Robot Rock, 1997, its best seller), while in Nashville Code of Ethics landed three CCM No. 1 singles with ForeFront-backed synth-driven Europop. In 1997 Ronnie Martin founded Plastiq Musiq, a label strictly devoted to analog Christian synthpop, cementing a small but devoted scene alongside Velvet Blue Music-adjacent new-wave revivalists like Fine China and the long-running Colorado act The Echoing Green (Supernova, 2000), and Joy Electric and The Echoing Green kept releasing into the 2010s and beyond.
