Christian Spoken Word
Located in 1 route
Performance poetry delivering Christian testimony, theology, and scripture in slam-poetry cadence — released as viral filmed performances (P4CM's Rhetoric events in Los Angeles) and as studio spoken-word albums blending verse with hip-hop and ambient production (Humble Beast). The delivery carries slam's breath control, internal rhyme, and escalating intensity, but the content is confessional and exegetical: conversion testimony, doctrinal argument, and scripture performed from memory. The filmed live performance is the genre's native release format — a single camera, a stage, and a poem — which made YouTube its distribution network and turned individual pieces into events with tens of millions of views.
History
Building on 1990s spoken-word interludes in Christian hip-hop (The Cross Movement) and church poetry in the Maya Angelou lineage, the scene broke out when P4CM's Rhetoric poetry events put Jackie Hill Perry's "My Life as a Stud" (2009) and Janette...ikz's "I Will Wait for You" (2011) on YouTube to massive viral audiences, while Propaganda's Humble Beast albums Excellent (2012) and Crimson Cord (2014) established the studio-album form; the Poets in Autumn tour (Ezekiel Azonwu, Janette...ikz, Joseph Solomon, and the Perrys) became the scene's touring institution, several of its poets crossed into books, music, and teaching careers, and the movement remains the defining modern form of Christian performance poetry.
