The CCM ballad is the slow-burn inspirational centerpiece of Contemporary Christian Music: lush adult-contemporary production built on piano or synth pads, orchestral strings (often a full studio orchestra in the 1980s Word/Sparrow era), gated-reverb drums entering at the second verse, and an almost obligatory key-change modulation into the final chorus. Vocals are the star — conservatory-grade belters with wide vibrato and multi-octave climaxes, backed by stacked choir-style harmonies on the last refrain. Tempos sit in the 60–80 BPM range, moods move from intimate confession to triumphant declaration, and arrangements follow a soft-verse/huge-chorus dynamic arc engineered for church solos and awards-show performances alike.

History

The style crystallized in the late 1970s and early 1980s Nashville CCM industry as the "inspirational" wing of Christian pop — a radio format and CCM Magazine chart category distinct from Christian rock — with Word Records and Sparrow Records as its hubs; Sandi Patty's and Amy Grant's early-1980s records (Grant's "El Shaddai" from Age to Age, 1982) made the orchestral faith ballad the genre's prestige format, institutionalized by the GMA Dove Awards' Inspirational Recorded Song of the Year category (won by Sandi Patty's "In Heaven's Eyes" at the 20th Dove Awards and Steven Curtis Chapman's "His Strength Is Perfect" at the 21st). Steve Green, Larnelle Harris, and Twila Paris carried the church-soloist tradition through the decade, while Michael W. Smith pushed the form toward mainstream adult contemporary ("Place in This World" hit the pop Top 10 in 1991); in the 2000s the style folded into modern worship, and MercyMe's "I Can Only Imagine" became its biggest-ever crossover, topping Christian charts and reaching mainstream radio in 2003.
