Understanding the genre

Budots is a Philippine electronic dance tradition closely tied to Davao City and to the loose, bent-knee movements of its dance. Computer-made beats, insistent bass and bright whistling or siren-like synth sounds provide an energetic framework for bodies in motion. The high leads are often called “tiw tiw,” a name that imitates their sound.

Dance and production feed each other. Pioneer DJ Love says he dances in the studio to judge whether a beat works, and describes recording everyday neighbourhood sounds to remix into music. Dance crews, videos, local sound systems and DJs all help carry the practice. There is room within that shared vocabulary for different producers: recent collaborative releases foreground DJ Danz and DJ Ericnem alongside DJ Love.

History

Budots developed through local dance and music-making in southern Philippines before wider audiences encountered it online. DJ Love’s own accounts place choreography and community activity at the centre of his work, later made with FL Studio. Eastern Margins dates his co-founding of the Camusboyz dance group to 2004 and describes wider Philippine circulation by the mid-2010s. Videos and local circulation helped the sound travel, while interviews also describe the stigma its makers faced. A single exact invention date would oversimplify the sources reviewed here.

The 2023 Manila Community Radio Boiler Room showcase brought international attention to an established scene. Eastern Margins released DJ Love’s Budots World (Reloaded) in 2024, followed by the collaborative 3-Hit Combo! in 2025. DJ Love’s NTS program supplies another continuing platform for the grassroots scene. These developments expand its reach while retaining named local producers and their distinct contributions.

Defining artists

  • Davao producer and choreographer whose dance-led practice helped develop budots and its wider circulation.

His productions grow from dance and neighbourhood sound; one pioneer’s account does not settle all invention claims.

  • Budots producer in the collaborative Davao scene and credited on 3-Hit Combo!

His melodic approach differs from the denser percussion associated with DJ Ericnem.

  • Budots producer represented in the three-producer showcase and DJ Love’s NTS program.

His percussive approach is one voice in a collaborative scene rather than a universal production recipe.
