Breathwork Music
Located in 1 route
Long-form, dynamically shaped instrumental music built to accompany conscious-breathing sessions — pranayama, holotropic, Wim Hof and shamanic breathwork — guiding practitioners through activation, peak and integration. Tracks are extended and evolving, moving from grounding drones and soft pads into swelling, cathartic builds and back to stillness, often with tribal percussion, vocal samples, field recordings and ambient washes. Tempos and intensity are engineered to the breath cycle rather than a dance beat. The mood is immersive, emotional and journey-like, meant to carry an altered, expanded state.
History
Breathwork music is an emerging functional lane tied to the 2010s popularity of modern breathwork, itself rooted in Stanislav Grof's holotropic breathwork (from the 1970s) and Wim Hof's method. Facilitators curate ambient, downtempo and world music for sessions, and dedicated artists arose: East Forest (Trevor Oswalt) built ceremony and breathwork albums, often sampling Ram Dass, and Jon Hopkins made the connection explicit with Music for Psychedelic Therapy (2021), whose track Sit Around the Fire features Ram Dass and East Forest. Curated libraries and playlists (Music for Breathwork and similar) now organize the repertoire, drawing on ambient, psychill and new-age catalogs.
