History
Christian AC coalesced in the 1990s as CCM's answer to mainstream adult contemporary radio and became the genre's dominant format as networks like K-LOVE went national; Billboard launched the Christian AC Airplay chart in June 2003 — MercyMe's "Word of God Speak" was its first long-running No. 1, and the band eventually amassed a record 21 chart-toppers there — and the format's core acts (Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, Natalie Grant) defined 2000s-2010s Christian radio; Matthew West's "Hello, My Name Is" logged a 17-week Christian Airplay No. 1 in 2013, and the streaming era's biggest crossovers — MercyMe's "Even If" (2017) and Lauren Daigle's "You Say" (2018, which also topped mainstream charts) — came straight out of the format, which remains the commercial center of Christian radio today.
