Understanding the genre

2-Tone is a British ska-revival scene that brings Jamaican dance rhythms together with concise pop songwriting and punk-era urgency. It is usually band music: guitar and keyboards strike or answer around the beat while bass and drums keep the dancers moving, with singers giving the songs a direct, distinctive character. Its late-1970s Coventry roots connect the sound to a multiracial musical community.

The records have more range than a single fast ska pattern suggests. The Selecter’s On My Radio puts unusual vocal interplay into a lively band arrangement; the Specials’ Ghost Town creates a heavier, more spacious reggae groove. Producer testimony describes deliberate choices about drums, organ and the mix. The shared identity is strong, but each band and recording gives it a different shape.

History

Jerry Dammers founded the 2 Tone label in 1979 within Coventry’s developing band scene. Its early releases brought the Specials and the Selecter together, while Madness and the Beat also belonged to the wider network. The label name and presentation carried a commitment to crossing racial divisions, as the Herbert museum’s exhibition explains.

The Selecter’s original debut album Too Much Pressure appeared in 1980. Later work broadened the musical picture: producer John Collins’s account of Ghost Town documents a carefully constructed studio arrangement, including different choices for the extended version. The scene’s influence outlived the first wave; the Selecter’s later tours, new albums and archival reissues show continued performance alongside retrospective preservation.

The network also included Madness, the Beat and the Bodysnatchers. Madness’s The Prince paid tribute to Prince Buster; the Beat paired singing and toasting with Saxa’s saxophone. The Bodysnatchers developed a slower rocksteady repertoire, with Rhoda Dakar singing over guitars, bass, keyboards, drums and saxophone. Their different approaches show how much musical variety the shared label and touring circuit could contain.

Gangsters, credited to The Special AKA on the first shared single with the Selecter, remains a formative recording in this history. The later Ghost Town is selected under the Specials name; these billings should not be mistaken for two unrelated founding bands.

Defining artists

  • The Coventry band connects the founding singles with Ghost Town’s more spacious reggae arrangement.

  • The band combines offbeat guitar, organ and distinctive vocal interplay; On My Radio offers a specific example.

  • North London band whose Prince Buster tribute The Prince connects its ska beginnings to the early 2 Tone network.

The Prince is the selected original 2 Tone single; later records appeared on Stiff and moved through broader pop.

  • Birmingham band joining Dave Wakeling’s singing, Ranking Roger’s toasting and Saxa’s saxophone in ska-based songs.

Its original 2 Tone single anchors the selection; later Go-Feet albums broaden the repertoire.

  • Rhoda Dakar-fronted seven-piece band bringing a slower rocksteady approach to the 2 Tone scene.

A short-lived performing band with two original 2 Tone singles and live repertoire.
