# Assist With Music

> Assist With Music is a music encyclopedia and an AI-assisted music creation workspace. It maps the world of musical styles — their history, eras, defining artists and songs — and publishes a growing library of reusable "loops": repeatable skills that you, an AI agent, can run to write, create, master, distribute, and organize music.

The **Music Loops & AI Skill Library** is a public catalog of repeatable loops you can run to make music *well* — from studying a theme to a released track. Each loop names the concrete skills it uses and how it connects to the others (what it requires, its alternatives, and what it pairs with). ## Artist Library

An AI-researched, community-built library of musical artists — their genres and sub-genres (linked into the genre trees), defining songs, and paste-ready style prompts. Use it to ground a song written "in the spirit of" an artist: research an artist once (the Artist Research Loop), store the findings, and retrieve them on every later song so the research compounds.

## Connect your AI agent (live MCP server)

Assist With Music runs a live remote MCP server. Point an MCP client (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex) at the connector URL, sign in over OAuth, and the tools operate on your own private planner data.

- `https://thesongplanner.com/mcp` remains a direct transport compatibility route for existing clients; publish the Assist With Music URL for new connections.
- MCP 2026-07-28 clients use self-contained requests beginning with server/discover; OAuth identity is verified on every request and no MCP session ID carries owner identity. Existing initialize/session clients remain supported.
- Claude (web/desktop): Settings -> Connectors -> Add custom connector -> paste `https://assistwithmusic.com/mcp` -> Connect -> sign in -> approve.
- Claude Code: `claude mcp add --transport http assistwithmusic https://assistwithmusic.com/mcp`, then `/mcp` -> Authenticate.
- 33 MCP tools are deployed and callable today. The 36-tool release source adds 3 private-media tools that remain production-pending until the Convex deploy and operational proof. It contains 13 preferred workflow tools, 4 additive album tools, and 19 legacy compatibility tools. - Before writing lyrics or a style prompt for a project, read its direction: avoid[] is off-limits; useSparingly[] is deliberate and infrequent, never the default or fallback.
- If the user says a song or one-off album belongs to no project, use the Singles system project; never invent a project or force a choice.
- Start with songplanner_context workspace or capabilities to learn browser/local-file/login boundaries, the Suno desktop-only handoff, and handoffSurfaces: Requests is the work desk; Queue is the shared Waiting for your AI / Needs you / Working / Done lifecycle. Set autonomy only from the user's explicit instruction.
- Genre encyclopedia workflow: songplanner_context genres -> genre_families -> genre_subgenres, or genre_search for an unknown term; then call genre_recipe with name equal to one exactReaderName (or names[] for a batch) for rich depth. Discovery is bounded public reference data with explicit empty/truncated results.
- When a task may benefit from a repeatable Music workflow, use songplanner_loops discover against the public loop library, then read one returned stable slug for bounded suitability, skill, step, and capability guidance.
- songplanner_save researchNotes accepts note/document kind, explicit contentClass, markdown, and sources; songplanner_read returns current content plus append-only revision metadata.
- songplanner_save plannerSong links finished lyrics into the normal owner-scoped Planner; completed external takes can be mirrored with saveToPlanner + externalId + audioUrl or sunoUrl, but the MCP server never operates Suno. A connected desktop AI follows the user's autonomy ceiling and external login boundary. Prompt-only saves return queueVersion plus generationGate; needs_owner_action means stop before begin_generation/Create until the owner approves or clicks, and songplanner_read returns queueVersion for the later handoff.
- Album tools assemble owner-scoped cross-project releases and record preparation proof, but never upload, submit, publish, purchase, accept terms, or spend.
- Project direction exampleArtistIds may reference only the owner's private artist memory; these records never enter public artist APIs or the sitemap.
- Queue reads expose queueVersion; every Queue mutation requires that expectedVersion plus a client-generated operationId reused only for the same retry. Create uses expectedVersion 0.
- Queue rows expose a stable owner-scoped queueNumber and queueLabel such as “Queue 42,” plus a direct Queue link. Say the label in conversation and use planId or queueNumber for read/activity/work actions. Numbers never expose another owner's sequence, are never reused, and remain stable after Done or discard; opaque MUS-Q queueRef values remain compatible for old clients and links.
- Stale client: disconnect and reconnect at the canonical URL, complete OAuth, refresh tools, call songplanner_context workspace, and re-read queueVersion before mutating.
